What Are the Best Spices for Grilling?

Grilled meat tastes great on its own. The charcoals and fire give it a distinct smoky flavor. But mastering the art of spices can take you from a simple barbecuer to a true grillmaster.

Our favorite spices for grilling, inspired by South African grilling, are coriander, paprika, and good ol’ salt and pepper. Grilling spices typically come in the form of seasoning salt shakers or seasoning packets.

What Is Seasoning Salt?

It’s much more than fancy table salt. Seasoning salt will soon become your best friend. Seasoning salt is the subtle mix of spices that you’ve probably tasted on steak fries or grilled chicken.

It’s generally a mix of salt, paprika, garlic, onion, and other typical spices you might use to cook meat. You’ll find seasoning salt to be very convenient – you won’t have to search through the spice cabinet for all your favorite grill spices.

Jimmy's Seasoning Salt

In some ways, Jimmy’s Seasoning Salt is similar to our Steak Sauce – it goes well on pretty much anything you make. Seasoning salt is a great addition to your steak, fish, chicken, vegetables, or potatoes.

You can use seasoning salt for both grilling and indoor cooking. Rub seasoning salt on your meat before grilling it, or have your guests add as much as they like. Similarly, while cooking, you can stir fry meat in seasoning salt and/or leave it on the table for people to add.

Other Spices & Seasonings

You can think of seasoning salt as a “gateway” spice option. We also offer many other spices for more adventurous folk! South Africans love to add coriander, one of the spices in curry, to their meat when grilling. You’ll find coriander in many of our seasoning mixes.

Several others have chili flavoring. We carry several different seasoning mixes to liven up your sausage, burgers, or beef jerky.

Do Spices Expire?

Technically, no, they do not. You can think of spices and seasoning packets like medicine – they won’t go bad, but they will lose their potency. If you were to use a seasoning packet that expired last year, you won’t have to call your friends and family to apologize for making them sick.

But...you might need to call them and apologize for making the worst-tasting barbecue ever. And maybe go out and buy some new spices.
